This webinar will focus on decolonizing museum exhibits, meta data (archives), collections and conservation techniques (care and handling) of cultural treasures.
Sean Young, Manager/Curator of Collections and Lab of Archaeology at Saahlinda Naay “Saving Things House” (Haida Gwaii Museum) at Ḵay Llnagaay, Canada, will lead us through a virtual tour of the museum, while focusing on its decolonizing approaches to offering experiences of Haida Gwaii culture from those who know it best.
As part of a series of webinars promoted by the ICOM since 2020, we are pleased to invite you to the webinar “Saahlinda Naay, ‘Saving Things House’, Indigenizing Museum Practices”, which will take place on the 15th of December, 16:00 Paris time. This webinar inaugurates a new format: it will be a lecture in which you can immerse yourself in Haida Gwaii culture with Sean Young and ask him questions live about decolonizing museum exhibits.
The webinar will be accessible on Yucca. The webinar will be in English and translated simultaneously into French and Spanish..
SPEAKER
Sean Young’s name is Gid yahk’ii. He is a proud member of the Haida Nation. He is part of the G̱aag’yals ḴiiG̱waay Raven Clan of Ḵ’uuna Llnagaay (Skedans). He is currently the Manager/Curator of Collections and Lab of Archaeology at Saahlinda Naay “Saving Things House” (Haida Gwaii Museum) at Ḵay Llnagaay. He is also an educated and trained field Archaeologist and have worked in this field since 1995. He is an instructor and guest lecturer for the Haida Gwaii Institutes Natural Resource Studies and Marine Conservation semester for the past three years. He has also worked for the Haida Gwaii Watchmen Program since 2004 as a cultural ambassador and caretaker living in ancient Haida villages and cultural sites every summer which are located within Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve Haida Heritage Site.
