Museums today face an increasing number of hazards such as armed conflict, political and economic instability, natural disasters, and the impact of global climate change. Our staff and visitors are also being targeted. In the face of such adversity, the museum and heritage profession, has sought not only to define measures to protect and save museums and heritage from destruction, but also to transform them into real action. This article delineates ICOM’s action in disaster-risk preparedness and management in recent years, with examples from Mali, Iraq, Syria and Nepal.
