The International Council of Museums (ICOM) is honoured to share the activities and projects carried out within the museum network during 2023.
The publication of the activity report is an opportunity to take stock of the recent progress made by our organisation – now in its 78th year of activity – while considering what can be further developed to ensure that museums keep assuming a leading role in addressing the global issues.
In a year rich with collaboration, advocacy and engagement, ICOM has done much to actively promote dialogue and incite action on the issues our collective society faces today.
In 2023 ICOM strengthened its global presence, governance, financial stability, communication, diversity, and sustainability efforts.
We advocated for the role of museums in preserving cultural heritage and shaping sustainable futures at G20 Culture Ministers Meeting in India. Two new ICOM International Committees were born, devoted to Museums and Sustainable Development and Social Museology, adding to the thirty-two already existing ones. This year also saw the launch of the first global award recognising innovative initiatives and exemplary museum practices in sustainable development, ICOM Award for Sustainable Development Practice in Museums.
Let us build on this solidarity that characterises our organisation and continue to work relentlessly to ensure that museums’ voices are heard and their potential to promote social cohesion in our world realised.
